National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Dr. Anthony Fauci is under fire for spending millions of taxpayers' money to conduct cruel experiments on animals. This included one inhumane experiment that allowed hungry insects to eat beagle puppies alive. The accusations come from the White Coat Waste Project (WCW), a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending taxpayer funding of cruel animal experiments. The WCW's allegations against Fauci began last year when the organization released a video showing researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), NIAID's mother agency, conducting an experiment in which monkeys were intentionally given brain damage and then psychologically tortured by being exposed to fake spiders and snakes. "Never-before-seen videos released to WCW depict distraught monkeys chained by the neck in tiny cages being tormented with rubber spiders and mechanical snakes, objects the primates instinctively fear, just to observe their reactions," wrote the WCW in the organization's report. "NIH 'white coats' sucked out parts of these monkeys' brains or destroyed them with toxic acid to intentionally worsen the primates' fear."

Beagle puppies tortured to death using taxpayers' money

The latest accusation leveled by the WCW against Fauci was about an NIH-funded experiment to test an experimental drug. The experiment conducted in a laboratory in Tunisia involved as many as 44 beagle puppies being tortured and killed. The heads of the beagles were locked in cages and eaten alive by hungry insects. Many of the beagles had their vocal cords removed to prevent them from barking. "Our investigators show that Fauci's NIH division shipped part of a $375,800 grant to a lab in Tunisia to drug beagles and lock their heads in mesh cages filled with hungry sandflies so that the insects could eat them alive," said a representative of the WCW. "They also locked beagles alone in cages in the desert overnight for nine consecutive nights to use them as bait to attract infectious sandflies."

Lawmakers demand answers from Fauci

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina and 23 of her colleagues in the House of Representatives have sent a letter to Fauci demanding him to address their "grave concerns about reports of costly, cruel and unnecessary taxpayer-funded experiments on dogs." "According to documents obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request by taxpayer watchdog group White Coat Waste Project, and subsequent media coverage from Oct. 2018 until Feb. 2019, NIAID [National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases] spent $1.68 million in taxpayer funds on drug tests involving 44 beagle puppies," the lawmakers wrote. "The commissioned tests involved injecting and force-feeding the puppies an experimental drug for several weeks, before killing and dissecting them. This is a reprehensible misuse of taxpayer funds." On Monday, Oct. 25, during an appearance on Fox News, Mace accused Fauci of "sending puppies to slaughter" using taxpayer dollars. According to Mace, she and her office immediately began investigating the accusations against Fauci. What she found was almost $2 million in taxpayer dollars spent just to kill 44 beagle puppies. "Why are we wasting this kind of money on these kinds of barbaric and gruesome scientific experiments on these sweet and innocent animals?" asked Mace. "These poor dogs killing them with our money. Terrible. We would never do this here in the U.S." "It's disgusting. And it's as if those lies about [Wuhan coronavirus] COVID-19 were not bad enough, now there is this. The more I learn about what is going on with taxpayer dollars and these grants that we're sending to other countries overseas, literally the worse it gets," Mace continued. (Related: NIH confesses to funding gain-of-function coronavirus research in Wuhan, proving Fauci a liar.) "I have been an animal rights activist for a long time. I promise to work across the aisle with Democrats and Republicans when we agreed on an issue. This is one where millions of Americans agree. This should stop immediately." Mace hopes the country can come together in a "bipartisan fashion" to prevent any animals from being subjected to such cruelty. "It's devastating. If this is what will bring our country together to do the right thing to save these animals from slaughter in the future, I am for it," said Mace. "Dr. Fauci has got to be held accountable for everything he has done to this country in the last years. It's devastating."
