U.S. consumer prices rose 3.7% in September from a year earlier, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported Wednesday, Oct. 14 – the final inflation reading before November's midterm elections and a fresh signal that rising energy costs continue to strain household budgets.
The consumer price index (CPI) climbed 0.6% from August, the largest monthly gain in five months, according to the BLS report
[1][2]. Gasoline prices rose 9.1% during the month and accounted for more than half of the overall monthly increase, the report stated
[3][4].
The report landed as wage growth continued to lag price increases. According to the BLS data, overall prices rose 3.7% from a year ago and 0.6% from August in September
[1].
BLS Report Shows Broad Price Increases, Core Inflation at 2.6%
The September report showed price gains spread across a wide range of consumer categories. Core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, rose 2.6% from a year earlier and 0.3% from August
[5].
Olu Sonola, head of U.S. economics at Fitch Ratings, described the report in stark terms, saying: "This inflation report is flashing red for the Fed"
[6]. He added that "energy pushed the headline number higher, as expected, but the real problem is that core inflation remains stuck above 3%"
[6].
Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, offered the administration's assessment during an appearance on
Fox Business. Despite describing the numbers as "disappointing," he reiterated that a majority of President Donald Trump's policies "are helping to keep inflation down."
Energy Costs Rise Amid Iran War; Diesel Up 70%
The September price increases were driven largely by energy costs tied to the ongoing conflict with Iran. Diesel prices have risen even more sharply. Fuel oil, which includes diesel, rose 15.3% during September alone and 74.2% compared with a year earlier, according to the BLS
[7].
The energy price spike has prompted emergency measures in some states. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statewide disaster proclamation in late September certifying a diesel fuel shortage, a move that Texas Railroad Commissioner Wayne Christian described as a "common-sense step towards expanding access to cheaper diesel"
[8]. The strain has also spread to international markets, with reports of the administration seeking additional diesel supplies from Russia to ease domestic fuel costs
[9].
Inflation Data Lands as Early Voting Begins for Midterms
The timing is particularly sensitive for the administration. A late-September roundup of polling by
Real Clear Politics found that nearly 70% of those surveyed disapproved of Trump's handling of inflation, while more than 60% disapproved of his performance on the economy and Iran
[10].
Vice President J.D. Vance, speaking three weeks before Election Day, acknowledged the political headwinds while expressing optimism about the party's chances. "We know that we're swimming against some serious historical trends here, but I think we have as good a chance as I've ever seen to really defy those historical trends," Vance said
[11].
Financial markets reacted sharply to the hotter-than-expected inflation data. Before the data was released, traders had expected the Federal Reserve to wait until December before raising rates.
Outlook: Consumer Spending Remains Strong Despite Price Pressures
Despite elevated prices and widespread consumer complaints about affordability, data continues to show that spending remains resilient. Not all categories tracked by the BLS showed sharp increases.
The next CPI reading, scheduled for release after the midterm elections, will determine whether the September surge represents a temporary spike tied to energy markets or a more enduring shift in the inflation landscape.
